Family: Geraniaceae

Scientific Name: Pelargonium capitatum Snowflake

Common Name: Scented Geranium Snowflake

DescriptionA rapid growing, somewhat spreading plant with blotches or streaks of white variegation on the leaves. Rose scented foliage and pink-mauve flowers.
Plant TypeAll Plants, Perennial Tender
Sunlightfull
MoistureThe plants grow best being kept evenly moist, although they are somewhat tolerant of drier conditions. I have found that this plant produces a large amount of big leaves. As it fills out the plant it will quickly wilt in hot conditions but quickly recovers after a good drink .
Soil & Siteaverage to well drained
Growing Mediaaverage to well drained
FlowersThe mauve-pink flowers are small about 3/4" and occur in dense compact groups of 10-20. Seems to be a shy bloomer
LeavesThe rose scented leaves are densely hairy, crenate and wavy. Variegation can be in the form of streaks or blotches. The variegation is variable. Stems will be totally green, others almost totally white and every combination in between. The stems become woody and fragile. Especially on older plants.
Rootsfibrous
DimensionsTwo year old plants have easily filled out 12" pots hanging 12-18" or more inches, The plant is somewhat spreading, weakly erect (decumbent).
MaintenanceCutting back to maintain the plants shape. All scented Geraniums can be over wintered. Most plants will be large. Cut back the plants 50-75% and repot. Grow in a bright window, keep evenly moist and prune to maintain size.
Propagationtip cuttings, allow cutting to callus before sticking, should be taken before the plants fallized (hardened by cold weather)
Cultivar OriginThe species plant P. capitatum was brought into Europe as early as 1690. Found growing along the coasts of South Africa.
