Description | Daphne Carol Mackie (Daphne x burkwoodi) is small variegated evergreen shrub that grows best in moist shaded areas. |
---|---|
Plant Type | Shrubs Broadleaf Evergreen, Site author's observations |
Hardiness Zone | (4)5-8 |
Sunlight | partial sun |
Moisture | average to moist |
Soil & Site | Well drained soil that holds moisture. Addition of organic matter to the soil and an organic mulch helps to maintain the moisture. |
Temperature | At first I was worried this plant wouldn't tolerate our zone #5 winters. But it has shown little if any winter kill in my southeastern Wisconsin garden over the last 4 winters. Survived the dry fall of 2013 and extremely cold winter of 2014 to my surprise. |
Flowers | small rosy pink, spring |
Leaves | evergreen to semi evergreen, small, cream edge |
Dimensions | 3 by 3 |
Maintenance | One problem I have had with this plant is it seems to split at the base. At times needs to be staked to add support. |
Cultivar Origin | This is a sport of a Burkwood Daphne that occured in Carol Mackie's garden, New Jersey, in 1962. The Burkwood daphnes were produced from a cross between D. caucasisca X D. cneorum . |
Author's Notes | I have used a hand full of Carol Mackie in gardens. Seems to be hardy but not as vigorous as I would like. Definitely does not like winter wet soils. All and all it is a good plant for the semi-shade gardens. |
