Description | Chocolate Soldier Panda Plant (Kalanchoe tomentosa) is a smaller Panda plant cultivar with darker brown, chocolate to amber coloration in the leaves plus darker leaf edge markings. |
---|---|
Plant Type | Succulents, Perennial Tender, Site author's observations |
Hardiness Zone | (9)10-11 |
Sunlight | Full, the more sun, the darker the foliage color; when I grew this plant in full sun on the drier side, the foliage got a chocolate/cinnamon tinge |
Moisture | average, dry |
Soil & Site | well drained |
Growing Media | well drained |
Flowers | orange red |
Leaves | felt covered, gray with brown edges, dark coloration with greater light |
Dimensions | 24 inches or taller |
Maintenance | After a while, the plant will lose most of its bottom leaves. At this time, it can be cut back, and it will regrow. |
Propagation | The quickest way is by tip cuttings, a slower method is by whole leaf cuttings. Break off an entire leaf and lay it flat on a propagating media. It will form roots from where the leaf was attached to the stem. Eventually a small plant will form at this point. I can't over emphasize eventually! |
Cultivar Origin | Chocolate Soldier' is one of the color variants collected by Professor Werner Rauh (1914-2000) of the University of Heidelberg |
Author's Notes | I have grown the Chocolate Soldiers, outdoors, in the full blazing, very dry during the summer. In these conditions the plant will flourish and grow true to form with lots of color in the leaves. |
