The colorful foliage is the selling point of this plant. Heart shaped leaves are a patchwork of yellow, green, bronze and red. Foliage may deteriorate in hot dry sites. A slow plant to emerge in the spring.

It is native to a large range from Japan to the mountains of Java, and appears once again to the west in Nepal.
Misc Facts
The scientific plant name is in honor of a Dutch biologist Maarten Houttuyn (1720–1798. Was published in Flora Japonica by Carl Thunberg in 1784.
