Fruit
A scarlet, tart edible red berry with a large pit. Good for making jams and jellies. Popular with robins, finches, cedar waxwings and other wild birds.
Leaves
simple, alternate, elliptical, toothed. glossy above and tomentose below.
Stems
Stems are covered with soft villous pubescence.
Dimensions
A broad spreading, dense shrub, reaching 6-10 feet tall by over 12 foot spread.
Propagation
I have grown these by sowing the seeds in outdoor beds in the fall. The seeds need a cold stratification period.
Native Site
Native to North west China, Korea and the Himalaya.
Cultivar Origin
Has been in cultivation since 1870.
