Description | An epicormic stem (shoot) is a shoot growing from an epicormic bud, which lies underneath the bark of a plant's trunk, stem, or branch. The buds lie dormant beneath the bark, their growth suppressed by hormones from active shoots higher up the plant. Under certain conditions, they will become vigorous shoots. |

Author's Notes | This happens more often than we think. I have seen them on stumps, lower branches in deep shade, then become full sun, suckering at the base of trees, etc. There has been an infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer in our area. The trees that were affected with be dying, then many of the dormant buds will break, giving the hope that the tree will regrow. It may but probably will die. |
