---|---|
Plant Type | Bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizoms, etc., Site author's observations |
Hardiness Zone | 7-10 |
Sunlight | full sun |
Moisture | average to growing in standing water |
Soil & Site | average |
Temperature | top will be killed with the first heavy frost |
Flowers | vivid orange, tangerine |
Fruit | warty capsule, round hard seeds |
Leaves | bronze, red and yellow, multi-colored veins |
Stems | stout stem, usually finite (reaches a certain height), underground rhizomes |
Dimensions | 5-7 feet tall, 24" spread |
Maintenance | After the frost has killed the top, the rhizomes should be lifted, cleaned, and stored in a cool, dry place. I prefer to keep the clump intact and then divide it in the spring. Depending on your storage area, they may need to be moistened occasionally. Check occasionally to see if the rhizomes are shriveling. |
Propagation | division of tubers |
Native Site | Species Canna are native to the tropical areas of South America. |
Misc Facts | Canna are often listed as growing from bulbs, which is correct. They grow from rhizomes. |
Author's Notes | This has always been one of my favorite Canna. The multicolored striped burgundy leaves, along with the vivid orange flowers make this plant a show stopper. |
