MaintenanceThe blooms are formed on the new wood. Pruning in the fall or early spring will produce lots of new wood. At this time you can control the height, spread and shape of the plant, by the amount that is pruned. I like to use a hand pruners not hedge shears. With hand pruners I can better control the shape and the cuts are more precise. Thinning can help reduce some of the weight off the branches Can be pruned back hard.
Author's NotesI have never grown this shrub in my garden but have seen it many times in Arboretums and Botanical gardens. Although it does change from white to pink, I have yet to see it look as good as the advertised!! Walking in Billings Park, Wisconsin (zone 4) and saw the best colored one ever. It was picture perfect and me without my camera. My sister has Vanilla Strawberry at her house in zone 4 and the fall color is phenomenal compared to the ones around me in zone 5.
